HKUST, CUHK and HKU Researchers Received $88M Grant to Develop AI and Robotics for Geriatric Care

Prof. Bert SHI (center), Project Coordinator and Professor of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at HKUST, delivered a presentation on the research project during a media briefing at the University Grants Committee office, along with HKUST winners of Theme-based Research Scheme projects.

The research project titled “Frontier and Human-centric AI and Robotics Technology for Geriatric Care” was awarded and approved HK$88.481 million under the Areas of Excellence (AoE) Scheme 2024/25 of the Research Grants Council (RGC). The project focuses on improving older individuals’ mental and physical care by developing human-centric frontier artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics technology, which will empower both the elderly themselves and their carers to manage health and address frailty. The team includes researchers from three universities. From HKUST, the team includes Profs. Bert SHI, Tim CHENG, Fumin ZHANG, Stuart GIETEL-BASTEN, Janet HSIAO, Qifeng CHEN, Xiaojuan MA, Yangqiu SONG, Can YANG, Hao CHEN and Xiaomeng LI.
