Histopathology is a cornerstone of clinical diagnosis, especially in cancer care. However, conventional chemical staining is often time-consuming and labor-intensive and may consume precious tissue samples. A research team led by Prof. CHEN Hao from the School of Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has developed a novel generative AI (GenAI) framework that can produce high-fidelity virtually stained images even when training image pairs are imperfectly aligned, paving the way for faster and more tissue-saving histopathology workflows. The study titled “Generative AI for misalignment-resistant virtual staining to accelerate histopathology workflows” was recently published in the international journal Nature Communications.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today launched SmartPath, a comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) system designed to transform the entire pathology workflow for cancer care. The system was developed by an HKUST research team led by Prof. CHEN Hao, Director of Collaboration Center for Medical and Engineering Innovation, and Assistant Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. SmartPath provides integrated support for clinical diagnosis, subtyping, biomarker quantification, treatment response assessment, and prognostic follow-up across a wide spectrum of cancers, aiming to accelerate turnaround times and enhance the personalization of treatment plans.

This landmark deployment kicks off a six-month pilot study open to 15,000+ students, faculty, and staff. The research project titled “Frontier and Human-centric AI and Robotics Technology for Geriatric Care” was awarded and approved HK$88.481 million under the Areas of Excellence (AoE) Scheme 2024/25 of the Research Grants Council (RGC). The project focuses on improving older individuals’ mental and physical care by developing human-centric frontier artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics technology, which will empower both the elderly themselves and their carers to manage health and address frailty.
