AoE Project Holds Second External Advisory Board Meeting and Showcases Integrated AI and Robotics Solutions for Elderly Care

The Frontier and Human-centric AI and Robotics Technology for Geriatric Care (AoE) project held its second External Advisory Board (EAB) Meeting on 1 June 2026. The meeting provided an opportunity for External Advisory Board members and project researchers to review progress, exchange insights, and discuss future directions for advancing AI- and robotics-enabled elderly care.
Led by Project Coordinator Prof. Bert Shi, the meeting reviewed key achievements across the project's five research areas and highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the physical and mental well-being of older adults through human-centric technologies. Particular emphasis was placed on translating research outcomes into practical solutions that address real-world needs in elderly care.

A key theme of the meeting was the increasing integration of research activities across the project. Through close collaboration with older adults, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community partners, the project continues to develop and refine technologies that support healthy ageing and caregiving.
The meeting also featured live demonstrations of two integrated systems. The first showcased a humanoid robot-led exercise platform that guides older adults through physical activities while assessing performance and providing personalized feedback. The second demonstrated the Humanoid-Assisted Health Test for the Elderly, which conducts health and frailty assessments through interactive dialogue and provides personalized recommendations based on verified information sources. These demonstrations illustrated how research advances from different project teams are being combined into practical solutions for elderly care.

Research teams also presented updates from the project's five research thrusts: Human-Robot Interaction, Trustworthy Generative AI, Robotics and Embodied AI, Sustainability, and Human-Centric Benchmarking. Highlights included advances in evaluation frameworks, embodied robotics, privacy-preserving monitoring technologies, retrieval-augmented AI systems, sustainable AI models, and multimodal human-robot interaction techniques.

During the discussion session, EAB members acknowledged the project's progress in integrating research activities and advancing system development. They also provided valuable recommendations on privacy and data governance, real-world deployment, system adaptability, user engagement, and impact evaluation to support the project's next stage of development.

The meeting concluded with discussions on future priorities, including expanding real-world testing, strengthening stakeholder engagement, enhancing privacy-preserving technologies, and improving system responsiveness. The guidance provided by the External Advisory Board will continue to support the project's mission of developing innovative and human-centric technologies that empower older adults and support caregivers.
