The Robotics and Embodied AI Thrust is led by Professor Fumin Zhang, Director of the Cheng Kar-Shun Robotics Institute (CKSRI). The team includes Professor Tim Kwang-Ting Cheng, Professor Qifeng Chen, and Professor Xiaomeng Li, with members from various departments at HKUST (MAE/ECE/CSE). This diverse academic background fosters interdisciplinary collaboration. The mission of the Robotics and Embodied AI Thrust is to develop advanced platforms that support research in human-centric AI and robotics. These developments encompass hardware, software, system integration, and real-world validation.

Key Deliverables
  • Development of Robotic Companionship Platforms
    Create robotic systems that engage with humans through activities such as dancing or exercising, provide coaching to teach correct movements, and assist elderly individuals in locating common household items.
     
  • Robotic Assessment of Mental and Physical Health
    Develop robotic platforms capable of analyzing human gestures to recognize behaviors and diagnose abnormal patterns, particularly for monitoring the well-being of older adults.
     
  • AI System for Elderly Health Monitoring
    Design and deploy an AI system for detecting daily behaviors and analyzing the health status of elderly individuals, culminating in a demonstrative prototype.

About CKSRI

The Cheng Kar-Shun Robotics Institute (CKSRI) is a multidisciplinary platform that supports and facilitates robotics-related research, development and education. With a focus on autonomous systems and robotics research, the Institute integrates innovations in sensors, devices, systems, networks, neurosciences, data analytics and machine learning to further research by faculty and students in a wide range of applications that aim to create societal impact. The Institute also nurtures a network of industry partners, designs entrepreneurship programs and drives knowledge dissemination.
