The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has recently introduced SmartCare – an AI platform developed by HKUST researchers that redefines patient journeys from triage to treatment – in its on-campus clinic. This landmark deployment kicks off a six-month pilot study open to 15,000+ students, faculty, and staff. Developed by Prof. Hao CHEN from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Director of Smart Lab, SmartCare builds on HKUST’s invention, MedDr—one of the largest open-source generalist multimodal foundation models for medicine in the world.

HKUST and Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Wuhan Union Hospital) have jointly established the "Collaborative Center for Medical and Engineering Innovation" (the Center). Prof. Hao CHEN, Assistant Professor of Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and Division of Life Science at HKUST, serves as one of the Center’s Co-Directors.

Prof. Xiaomeng LI, Assistant Professor of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and Associate Director of Center for Medical Imaging & Analysis at HKUST, and her research team have developed a groundbreaking AI technology that reconstructs precise 3D bones and organs models from minimal X-ray images, slashing patients’ radiation exposure by up to 99% compared to CT scans. This innovation not only enhances patient safety but also reduces costs and wait times, with potential applications in surgical planning, real-time imaging, and personalized implants. HKUST team is collaborating with different industry partners to implement this technology in public hospitals.

The 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, held during 9 – 13 April 2025, showcased nearly 1,050 submissions from 35 countries and regions of inventors, universities, institutes and companies. Among which, the inventions led by Profs. Tim CHENG and Xiaomeng LI, faculty members of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at HKUST, received three awards.

The research project titled “Frontier and Human-centric AI and Robotics Technology for Geriatric Care” was awarded and approved HK$88.481 million under the Areas of Excellence (AoE) Scheme 2024/25 of the Research Grants Council (RGC). The project focuses on improving older individuals’ mental and physical care by developing human-centric frontier artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics technology, which will empower both the elderly themselves and their carers to manage health and address frailty.
